Xbox 360: Five years in the market

Decades after hosting titles that revolutionized the videogame industry like Prince of Persia, Microsoft realized that interactive entertainment is an excellent business; however, its operating system, Windows, failed to position itself as the platform of choice for home videogamers, since users preferred home consoles, reason why Bill Gates' company developed their own console.

On November 2005, Microsoft launched the Xbox 360, their second home videogame console. Given that both, Nintendo and Sony launched their consoles by the end of 2006, the company's strategy was to get ahead a year before the competition trying to gain shares.

Since its debut in home consoles, Microsoft implemented multimedia capabilities Xbox played both audio and video, while Xbox 360 is capable to play even more audio and video formats. It can functions as an entertainment center as well, since it can be connected to a PC to play its content.

Only four years past between the first and the second Xbox generations, however Microsoft is still not planning to launch a third generation as of yet, actually, it is planned that the Xbox 360 lasts approximately ten years on the market.

In order to last five more years on the market, Microsoft developed a device called Kinect, which is a motion sensing camera that allows the user to play without controllers; actually the device's slogan is "You are the controller". Videogame industry have changed more along these five years that it did the last decade, so we cannot imagine what comes next during the remaining lustrum of the Xbox 360's lifespan.
