Masks: a synonym of Mexican Wrestling

When we think about Mexican wrestling, the first that comes to mind is a parade of masks allusive to wild beasts and mystic beings. This is justified precisely because, the mask is the symbol of wrestling, our true national sport.

Curiously, the first wrestler using a mask during a combat was a north American known as Ciclón McKey. Six years later, in 1939, the rude Murciélago Velázquez would be the first Mexican covering his face to give his character a funeral look.

In Mexico, the combats where the masks are bet are common and losing them is a serious business, since not only the face and the name of the fighter is revealed, but he can't use it in combat for three years, according to the rulebook from the Comisión de Box y Lucha Libre.

Wrestlers not only create characters: they create emporiums and, as such, can be inherited from father to sons. Dr. Wagner left his name and mask to his son, Dr. Wagner Jr and this one, in turn, yielded his fame to his son, The Son Of Dr. Wagner Jr., there may be nicknames added, but all are identified with the name Wagner,

Technics are the closer we have to superheroes and the rudes are the closer we have to super villains. Without their masks the will only be fighters like the ones in box that, although respectable, they are not as enigmatic.
