PlayStation 3: the fall of a giant

At the end of the 80's, both Nintendo and Sony worked together on a CD reader for the Super Nintendo, but the project never saw the daylight. Sony liked the idea of entering to the videogame industry, so they kept working on it and in 1994 launched the PlayStation, their first console. Since its launch, the platform had an outstanding success, which continued with the PlayStation 2 and it was expected the same one for the PlayStation 3, but that didn't happened.

Besides the positioning of the PlayStation 3 as a videogame platform, Sony tried to sell it as a multimedia entertainment system since it supports a wide variety of formats of audio, video and images; provides with the weather forecast, features a web browser and, if it is connected to the internet and left on, north American research centers can use its processing power to run simulations.

There is only one thing that the gamers are more loyal than their videogame consoles: their wallets. Sony lost the floor and their most recent console started with a 599 dlls price tag. Given that most of the gamers are teenagers and they make a living with their parent's allowances, they couldn't afford the platform and switched to the Xbox 360 since it offered the same games with a similar graphic quality.

Both the original PlayStation and the PlayStation 2 were redesigned on their time, but it was at the end of their respective cycles when new consoles were launched. On the case of the PlayStation 3, the redesign came just the in the middle of the console's cycle, given that it was necessary to change the route, since the former one was taking them nowhere.

If instead of repelling their potential costumers stating that the PlayStation 3 "is not for everyone", and Sony staying loyal to their customers, the console probably would have stayed on the same successful path traced by both the PlayStation and the PlayStation 2. It is still not too late to correct their path and with their new features, like 3D, the new products like PlayStation Move and the new marketing strategies, Sony still has a chance to recover.
