Wii: the revolution on the industry

During two generations, Nintendo dominated the home entertainment consoles market, but its might decreased with its third console and succumbed on the fourth one before the first Sony platform. It was believed that the new Nintendo console will be a failure; however, the company surprised the world with an unprecedented success.

Initially named Revolution, Wii is the fifth home entertainment system from Nintendo. Unlike the former consoles from the company, it features a TV remote-like controller that is motion sensing, in a way that the user has to move it to imitate the character's movements on screen to perform attacks or complete mini-games.

Wii success comes from many factors, but two are the most important: its price tag and its interactive gameplay. In order to keep a low price and for the developers to focus on interaction instead of graphics, Nintendo limited the technical capabilities of the platform, which makes it the less attractive from the three speaking on visuals.

One of the reasons many people stay away from videogames was the complexity on the buttons: at the beginning they had only two buttons, then they had eight and on, but when they saw the simplicity on how the Wii was played, they decided to try the videogame sweetness and many were enchanted with the experience, in a way that there are Wii consoles in some retirement homes in US.

Excepting the launch of new channel (some irrelevant and some available only in Japan) and the launch of MotionPlus, an external accessory that improves the Wii Remote capabilities (now included in the new Wii Remote Plus), Wii haven't offered new options, reason why its sales have decelerated.
